On the semantics and pragmatics of epistemic modals

چکیده

This paper explores a rich source of data for theories of this vocabulary. The debate over the viability of standard truth conditional theories has called attention to the distinctive behavior of epistemic vocabulary in eavesdropping judgments, indicative suppositions, and statements of disagreement and retraction. But extant accounts are not sufficiently sensitive to distinctive features of the way in which epistemic vocabulary interacts with other epistemic vocabulary. If we start by studying the behavior of simple nested epistemic modals, we may naturally build a theory that explains the more complicated behavior of epistemic modals under disjunction and over indicative conditionals, and even the puzzling effects of embedding epistemic vocabulary in classically valid arguments. In §1, I make unifying observations about the suggestive behavior of epistemic vocabulary in each of these contexts, extracting several desiderata for semantic and pragmatic theories.

Epistemic Modals

Epistemic modal operators give rise to something very like, but also very unlike, Moore’s paradox. I set out the puzzling phenomena, explain why a standard relational semantics for these operators cannot handle them, and recommend an alternative semantics. A pragmatics appropriate to the semantics is developed and interactions between the semantics, the pragmatics, and the definition of consequ...

On the semantics and pragmatics of epistemic vocabulary∗

This paper motivates and develops a novel semantics for several epistemic expressions, including possibility and necessity modals and indicative conditionals. The semantics I defend constitutes an alternative to standard truth conditional theories, as it assigns sets of probability measures rather than sets of worlds as sentential semantic values. I argue that what my theory lacks in conservati...

The acquisition of epistemic modality

In this paper we try to contribute to the body of knowledge about the acquisition of English epistemic modal verbs (e.g. Mary may/has to be at school). Semantically, these verbs encode possibility or necessity with respect to available evidence. Pragmatically, the use of epistemic modals often gives rise to scalar conversational inferences (Mary may be at school -> Mary doesn’t have to be at sc...

More on Epistemic Modals

The questions are obviously related, but they should not be conflated, at least not well in advance of theory. Very roughly, the first is a question of semantics, the second of pragmatics (or of the semantics– pragmatics interface). The puzzle about supposition and epistemic modality I raised in section 1 of Yalcin 2007 was primarily used to motivate a specific answer to the first question — th...

Communicating with Epistemic Modals in Stochastic λ -Calculus

Dynamic semantic theories generally treat epistemic modals as operators which test that their propositional argument bears some relation to the conversational common ground (e.g., entaiment or partial overlap), but do not change it. This means that epistemically modalized sentences do not carry any information about the world, except perhaps as a meta-comment on the state of the conversation an...
